Some Goodbyes
Real Quiet was a small horse for a Thoroughbred. Bought for a insanely low price as a two year year old as a three year old he went on to win big. Bob Baffert trained this three year old nicknamed 'The Fish' to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He lost the Belmont to Victory Gallop by a nose. He was a gentle soul as far as racehorses go.
Yesterday at age 15 Real Quite crushed his shoulder. They don't know how he injured himself.After evaluation he was euthanized. Although not very successful as a sire he did father some champions. Real Quiet is the second horse to attempt the Triple Crown that I remember. He cemented my love of West Coast horses as a young age. I get all silly over horses, and I hope he rests in peace.
The second goodbye is not a death, thank goodness. However, Rachel Alexandra was retired from horse racing yesterday. After not a very good season the 2009 Horse of the Year will be moving on to relaxing pastures and motherhood. Next year she will be bred to champion Curlin.
In real life-that post is coming. When time magically falls out of the sky and my day gets longer.
