“Ianto, why so quick this morning with the coffee?” Gwen questioned as Ianto handed her a coffee mug and hurried on his way up to Jack’s office bearing three more.

“I’m leaving,” Ianto announced as he continued up the steps.

Gwen squeaked and nearly dropped her coffee in shock and Ianto was forced to turn and make an addition to his statement.

“I’m leaving for London, and I’ll be back tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure everyone had their coffee.”

Jack came out of his office and removed his coffee from the tray. He eyed his two employees speculatively trying to figure out what was going on. Gwen appeared appeased and Ianto was now eyeing him like he was hoping the coffee would distract him from something. Gwen also watched this exchange and suddenly found something on her computer screen fascinating.

Ianto squeezed past Jack and into his office where he deposited the two remaining coffees on Jack’s desk.

“Wait until you try his coffee Mickey, you’ll never accept one made by any other,” Jack announced as he walked in. “However, he’s mine so don’t even think of trying to smuggle him off somewhere.”

“Thank god for coffee,” was Mickey’s only response.

“If that will be all Sir, I’ll be seeing you tomorrow afternoon,” Ianto announced hoping Martha and Mickey would provide suitable distraction that Jack wouldn’t mind him leaving or be too concerned about why Ianto was leaving.

“Where do you think you’re going that you won’t be back until tomorrow?” Jack demanded setting his coffee cup down and advancing on Ianto somewhat anxiously. Yes, combine everything that had happened to Jack recently and he wasn’t too keen to let Gwen or Ianto out of his sight. Thank goodness, Ianto reflected that they’d managed to get the Dalek shell out of the hub before he got back. He’d probably be handcuffed to the coffee machine right now otherwise.

“An errand, Sir, and a private one at that,” Ianto informed him allowing Jack to catch him. “Shouldn’t take long. However, what with Earth being stolen to a different part of the galaxy and all, there are things to tidy. You know how I like to tidy.”

“In London?” Mickey piped up somewhat incredulously. “Don’t you think there’s enough to tidy here?”

“I have to help a friend from Torchwood London,” Ianto fibbed hoping Jack would buy it. “She doesn’t have anybody else.”

“One day?” Jack questioned staring intently at Ianto as he held him within his grasp. “You’ll be back tomorrow without a scratch on you?”

“Without a scratch,” Ianto promised sincerely. There was nothing dangerous in his errand. “With Mickey and Martha here you should have plenty of staff. You won’t even miss me.”

“But we’ll miss your coffee!” Gwen yelled from the bottom of the stairs. Obviously conversation carried.

“She has a point,” Martha commented as she took a sip of her coffee and something like bliss passed over her face. “But I guess we can live without coffee for one day.”

“Speak for yourself,” Jack replied curtly before reluctantly letting go of Ianto. “Alright, but if you’re not back by seven PM tomorrow I will hunt you down and you are never leaving the hub again. Not a scratch you hear me? Not a scratch.”

“Of course Sir,” Ianto returned making good on his escape while he could. He was prepared to leave from the hub as soon as the coffee was delivered. As Ianto made his hasty exit from the hub he reflected that perhaps he should have gone with simply leaving a note and not bothering to argue the point.

As it was Ianto was not thrilled to be going off to London so soon after Jack had returned. Actually, Ianto was never keen on going to London, he had left for a reason after all. Still, Ianto felt that this errand was more than worthy of his time and his effort to show some appreciation.

Ianto reached the greater London metro area and watched carefully for his exit. Eventually he wandered through suburban streets until he reached a park. He then waited. Ianto did not have long to wait before and old man and a younger woman with red hair walked through the park. Every once in awhile the man glanced up at the sky as if checking it was still there. The woman glanced up as if searching for something, like she was lost. Ianto got out of the car and approached.

“Excuse me, Donna Noble?” Ianto questioned as he approached an affable smile on his face. He had been warned that Donna was not the most easy person to get on with.

“Who wants to know?” Donna questioned fiercely. Then she paused and looked Ianto over in his suite. “Do I know you?”

“We have a friend in common,” Ianto answered thinking of Jack. Jack was not the person who had sent him here, but considering how the Doctor kept leaving broken people for Ianto to look after he wasn’t going to claim him as a friend. “I work for Torchwood.”

Donna’s grandfather looked mildly alarmed at this news and was eying Ianto with a look of panic. “Can I speak to you a moment in private lad?”

“Oi! Watcha you lot got to say to each other that you can’t say to me?” Donna demanded.

“Nothing,” Ianto answered blandly. “How about we go get a cup of coffee and I discuss with you why I’m here? You see Donna, you are very important, and although you may never remember why, in fact it would be better if you didn’t, some of us will not forget.”

They started toward an outdoor coffee and tea shop where they took seats with their drinks. Ianto pulled out two copies of his private card. He handed one to Donna and to Donna’s grandfather.

“That’s my phone number. My name is Ianto Jones, if anything ever happens that’s strange you need to call me,” Ianto told them. He looked sternly at Donna’s granddad. “I can help.”

“I don’t even know you, why should I trust you? You show up here in your suit saying you know a friend of mine. Well, I can’t think of anyone who would be friends with the Torchwood lot.”

Ianto pulled out another card and handed it to Donna. “I’m aware of your unique skills, that’s the address for a job of yours. Not just temping, but an actual job. You may not remember what happened in the last few weeks, but you can be a part of what fixes it. Donna, you can make a difference.”

Donna’s grandfather looked at Ianto sadly and Ianto met his gaze with equal bitterness. She should know what she had accomplished instead of staring into her teacup looking lost and uncertain. Donna was angry and bitter that she wasn’t a part of things, she hadn’t even noticed the planet moving. Now some good looking man who looked fabulous in a suite walked in and gave her a job. It just didn’t happen.

“I don’t know,” Donna said slowly looking up at Ianto from her teacup. “I don’t think I’m who you think I am.”

“I know who you are,” Ianto answered simply as he stood. “I know how strong you are. Report to that address tomorrow morning, and if you need anything call.”

Ianto walked away knowing he would be back in a few months. The Doctor had asked Ianto to watch Donna. Ianto, was after all just Torchwood’s coffee boy. The only one Donna hadn’t seen for longer then a second. The only one that wouldn’t bring back fatal memories for Donna. Ianto would never agree that what the Doctor had done was right, he understood that the best of intentions often had negative results. He wondered absently if Donna would ever be the same or if like Jack she would always crave something that came from traveling with a Time Lord.

Ianto watched Donna the next morning as with the prompting of her grandfather she headed out to the job that Ianto had given her. It was a subset of Unit that was not in any way attached to Unit or the Doctor. There would be no risk, and she would be helping to rebuild the structure. No one there knew of Donna Nobles involvement in saving earth. Ianto watched for several hours outside of work before heading back to Cardiff.

Ianto was tired by the time he got to Cardiff, but he was unable to return home until he checked in with Jack. Just another one of the Doctor’s broken companions, and now Martha was in the mix as well. Ianto loved them for themselves so it wasn’t as if he minded watching them but he vowed he’d never let another loved one go with the Doctor. Ianto entered the Hub on the invisible lift.

“Ianto,” Jack greeted as he came down from his office his eyes scanning Ianto intently.

“Yes Sir, returning to Cardiff without a scratch as promised,” Ianto replied. “Would you like some coffee?”

“In a minute Ianto, come here,” Jack commanded as Ianto stepped off the lift. Now physically holding Ianto he seemed to believe in his presence. “I missed your coffee.”

“I’m sure you did,” Ianto answered extracting himself and heading for the coffee machine. “Don’t worry, I won’t be going back to London for awhile.”

“But you’re going back?” Jack questioned.

“Yes, Jack, I’m going back,” Ianto replied looking up at him.

“You didn’t go and visit another survivor did you?”

“No. But I went to help someone.”

“You’re not going to tell me what you were doing are you?”

“You’re happier not knowing,” Ianto answered. And it was true, Jack would be happier not knowing about another abandoned companion who had been loyal to the Doctor. There was nothing Jack could do to help after all. “It will be alright, sir. Now, here’s you’re coffee.”
